The Art of Seventeenth-Century Science

“The Art of Seventeenth-Century Science”, is on display in the Proscholium at the Bodleian Library at the University of Oxford from 18 August 2012 until 30 September 2012.  On Wednesday, 19 September, Anna Marie Roos will be giving a public lecture to accompany the exhibit, “The Art of Science: The Rediscovery of the Lister Copperplates” from 13:00 until 13:30 in Convocation House, Bodleian Library.

The pioneering naturalist Martin Lister (1639−1712) taught his two teenage daughters, Susanna and Anna, to draw, so that they could illustrate his comprehensive work on conchology (the study of molluscs and their shells). On display will be the sketchbooks, the original engraved copperplates, and the prints that illustrate this 17th-century book.
