Hunterian Art Gallery at 10.30am, Saturday 20th July Visit for SHNH Members

SHNH Members are offered a guided tour by Geoff Hancock, Curator of the exhibition ‘This Unrivalled Collection: The Hunterian’s First Catalogue’ at Glasgow University.

The displays cover the history of the Hunterian Museum as told through objects selected from Captain Laskey’s ‘General Account of the Hunterian, etc.’ (1813). William Hunter’s collection, a complete museum of the Enlightenment, was put together by one of the great figures of eighteenth century medicine and collector of antiquaries and natural history. He suggested the mastodon  was extinct, established the function of the placenta, acquired quantities of Cook voyage material, employed J.C. Fabricius as his insect curator and built up the best British collection of coins and medals, second only to the French King’s. All of these amongst other things are highlighted and re-presented in the gallery.

This tour will be free to members who should present themselves at the Hunterian Art Gallery at 10.30am, Saturday 20th July.
