The Alwyne Wheeler Bursary
The Alwyne Wheeler Bursary was established in 1999, on the occasion of Alwyne Wheeler’s retirement as the Society’s Honorary Editor. He expressed the wish that the fund be created to facilitate original contributions to the study of the history of natural history by scholars under the age of 30.
Thus the Alwyne Wheeler Bursary supports travel by eligible scholars to meetings of the Society. The award will include up to £100 (or equivalent in other currencies) for travel, plus the conference registration.
Preference will be given to scholars who want to contribute a paper or other presentation, and recipients will be invited to submit their paper for publication in the Society’s journal, Archives of natural history.
The Alwyne Wheeler Bursary normally supports travel only to the Society’s Annual General Meeting which is held in the spring each year, before the end of May.
From time to time Council may designate other meetings as eligible, and notice of these will be provided through the Newsletter and this website. One bursary will be available for each such meeting.
Applications can be submitted at any time (see the application form) from eligible individuals who do not have to be members of the Society.
